The New York City Police Department is upgrading its weapons arsenal amid growing concerns about terrorism.
The department says $729,000 is being spent on 450 new automatic rifles for the Emergency Services Unit.
That means every officer in the division will have their own rifle and will not have to share, as is the case now.
The rifles are Colt M4 Commandos and can be adjusted specifically for each officer's preference or assignment.
The unit's current supply of automatic rifles will now be used for training purposes.
