Since President Obama took office in 2008, Texas has spent more than $5 million suing the federal government under his administration.

Most recently, Attorney General Ken Paxton challenged the government on spousal benefits for same-sex couples, and the Affordable Care Act.

Those new challenges have racked up more than $250,000 dollars in taxpayer costs.

According to the Houston Chronicle, more than half of all of Paxton's lawsuits have targeted the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Critics call the lawsuits a waste of money, and say they're politically motivated.

Paxton's office says the lawsuits are aimed at protecting Texans.
