Austin's airport is not immune to the region's growing pains. It's expected to reach capacity this year, with growth continuing at 8 percent a year. As our Jeff Stensland explains, that has a couple of airlines looking to move to a smaller terminal with a few less frills.
Austin city leaders are about to consider a plan that could bring some relief to a crowded Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Allegiant and Frontier Airlines want to move into the South Terminal.
ABIA mothballed the terminal in 2009.
The company planning to lease the property wants to spend $11.2 million to renovate the building, and have it open this winter.
Airport managers say the main airport is at capacity and in need of relief.
"We are going into about an eight-gate expansion onto that terminal. That means there will be a couple of gates that we are going to wind up losing in that construction project as well. This will help that expansion project go along, as well," said ABIA spokesman Jim Halbrook.
Travelers will have to think twice if Allegiant and Frontier move to the South Terminal.
It's only accessible by taking Highway 183 south of the airport, then taking Burleson Road.
City leaders will consider the lease agreement Thursday.
