A familiar Austin voice is leaving the airwaves.
KLBJ's Sam Cox, better known as Sgt. Sam, is retiring after almost 30 years on the air.
He starts up your day on the "Mark, Ed and Sgt. Sam" morning show discussing controversial stories in Austin.
It's not his first retirement, though.
Earlier in life, Cox retired from the Austin police force and then Texas Department of Transportation.
"Being in the news and in police work gave me the insight that I needed in order to pull this show off," said Cox. "Can you imagine 31 years of seeing the very best society has to offer, to the very very lowest society has to offer?"
Looking back to all of the things he's said, Cox knew his exit might be a relief for some listeners.
"There's some people who are going to be delighted with me not being on the air, but it's something I can live with. It doesn't bother me," he said.
Now he says it's time to hang up his headphones -- trading air time for more family time.
"You have to kind of look at it from a reasonable standpoint that, at some point in time, it's not all about me. It's about other people and the family and doing what I think is right," he said.
Sgt. Sam will sign off July 31.
"All my thanks goes out to the listeners. I couldn't be in the position I'm in if the listeners didn't like what they hear,"he said.
