The Austin Police Department reported its data from recent SWAT calls at Monday's public safety commission meeting.
At the meeting, officers explained how their SWAT units function. They also talked about how they make the call on when to deploy a SWAT team.
The department says it’s only had one lethal force situation in the last four years. The most recent SWAT call happened March 5.
"We will continue to operate in a community-oriented fashion here in Austin. That's how we have always aligned ourselves, and that is the philosophy of the department,” Asst. Chief Brian Manley said. “But we also have the responsibility and the duty to make sure we are prepared to handle some of the changing threat picture that we see across the country."
Since 2012, APD's SWAT unit has responded to more than 200 situations that involve a violent subject. The department says it has not had any serious injuries during those calls.
