CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. -- Democrat Monica Wallace has declared victory in the 143th Assembly District over Republican Russell Sugg.
She'll replace Angela Wozniak, who is leaving after one term amid sexual harassment allegations.
"I'm excited. I really appreciate the fact that the voters of the 143rd, I'm going to restore integrity and dignity back, going to work really hard for them every day to make Cheektowaga and Lancaster and Western New York the best it can be," Wallace said.
Wallace is a faculty member at UB's law school.
Sugg, a Lancaster Village Board member who also touted ethics reform, congratulated Wallace on the win and hopes she can stay true to her word.
Sugg adds he did what he could, noting his grassroots campaigning efforts.
"I wore out two pair of shoes, did my best by walking door-to-door talking to people," Sugg said. "I did my best, it was respectable. God willing, I could do better for you in the future."
While Wallace says she's ready to get to work, she took a moment in her victory speech to joke that she plans to take her family on vacation to relax a little bit before she puts her nose to the grindstone.
