Today's Big Stories
1. Trump's birthright citizenship order gets put on hold by 2nd federal judge
A federal judge on Wednesday ordered a second temporary pause on President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for anyone born in the U.S. to someone in the country illegally.
U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman said no court in the country has endorsed the Trump administration's interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Trump's inauguration week order had already been on temporary hold nationally because of a separate suit brought by four states, and originating in Washington state, where a judge called the order "blatantly unconstitutional." In total, 22 states, as well as other organizations, have sued to try to stop the executive action.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told the Houston Chronicle last month that he has no problem with legalizing sports betting in the state.
Abbott appeared on the newspaper’s "Texas Take" podcast, and he said he considers sports betting a part of the entertainment of watching professional sports.
“I don’t have a problem with online sports betting,” Abbott said on the podcast. “The reality is that I’d be shocked if there were not some Texans that do it already. It’s a very common practice, and it seems to be part of the entertainment that goes along when you’re watching a football game, especially pro football, or other types of sports and things like that. I don’t have a problem with that.”
3. Texas Rep. Al Green says he'll file new impeachment articles against Trump
Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, says he will file impeachment articles against President Donald Trump on Wednesday, just two weeks into his second term, citing the Israel-Hamas war as the impetus.
The Houston-area congressman started off his speech in response to President Trump's most recent remarks about Gaza with the statement “ethnic cleansing is not a joke.” Trump revealed his controversial plans for the Gaza Strip in a news conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.
4. Trump will sign an executive order barring transgender female athletes from competing
President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Wednesday designed to prevent people who were biologically assigned male at birth from participating in women's or girls' sporting events.
The order, which Trump is expected to sign at an afternoon ceremony, marks another aggressive shift by the Republican president's second administration in the way the federal government deals with transgender people and their rights.
