Today's Big Stories

1. White House asks for $163B in cuts to nondefense spending and boosts in defense, border funding

The White House is proposing a budget for the federal government for the next fiscal year that would spend the least amount on nondefense programs since 2017, or 2000 when adjusted for inflation, a senior Office of Management and Budget official told reporters on a call on Friday.

It comes as the administration looks to implement sweeping cuts to items such as foreign aid and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in tandem with its far-reaching government downsizing campaign carried out by the U.S. DOGE Service while, at the same time, boosting funds going to defense and the border.

2. Gregg Popovich out as Spurs head coach, transitions to another role

Gregg Popovich stepped down as coach of the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, ending a three-decade run that saw him lead the team to five NBA championships, become the league’s all-time wins leader and earn induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He will remain as team president.

"While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich said. Mitch Johnson, a Spurs assistant who filled in for Popovich for the season’s final 77 games, becomes the team’s head coach.

3. The University of Texas at Austin, officials sued over response to pro-Palestinian protests in 2024

A lawsuit has been filed against the University of Texas at Austin and former UT-Austin President Jay Hartzell by two former students and two current students who were arrested at a pro-Palestinian protest on campus in April 2024.

In addition, the students are also taking legal action against the University of Texas System Board of Regents, Gov. Greg Abbott, and officers from UTPD and DPS. The lawsuit alleges that the students’ pro-Palestinian views led to their unlawful targeting and arrest.

4. Trump signs executive order directing federal funding cuts to PBS and NPR

President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order aiming to slash public subsidies to PBS and NPR as he alleged "bias" in the broadcasters' reporting. The order instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies "to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS" and further requires that that they work to root out indirect sources of public financing for the news organizations.

The broadcasters get roughly half a billion dollars in public money through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and have been preparing for the possibility of stiff cuts since Trump's election, as Republicans have long complained about them.
