CHARLESTON, S.C. — The US Department of Transportation granted the South Carolina Department of Transportation $195 million to fund the Long Point Road Interchange Project.
According to SCDOT, this is the largest single grant award in the agency’s history. The department said it has secured $372 million overall in federal grant dollars to advance infrastructure projects.
"The Long Point Road Interchange Project is an investment in both our economy and the quality of life of our people that will reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance access to the Port," said Gov. McMaster. "Thanks to the support of our congressional delegation, South Carolina continues to secure transformative investments in our infrastructure, ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive for years to come."
This project will improve operations of the I-526 and Long Point Road interchange, with dedicated flyover ramps for port-related traffic to improve operations and local traffic.
Senator Lindsey Graham also praised SCDOT’s receiving of the funds. “This project is a game-changer for Charleston County and the Port, and it is critical to ensuring safe travel and continued growth in the region,” wrote Graham. “This is excellent news for our state.”
The project is projected to cost $325 million.
“The design phase of the project is well underway and construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026,” according to a release from SCDOT.
