Having spent eight days at the New York State Fair and walking over 40 miles throughout the 13-day period, I have chosen some of my favorite stops and things I look forward to doing again at the 2025 New York State Fair.
1. Six-horse hitch competition for draft horses
My favorite thing at the 2024 New York State Fair was watching Percheron horses compete in the six-horse hitch competition. I had never seen this before and it was incredible to watch these massive draft horses pull a wagon operated by only two people.
2. Ride the skyline at sunset
On a clear day as the sun sets over the state fairgrounds, I bet the best place to see it is on the skyline over the Midway.
3. Maple soft serve ice cream
Most people think of fried Oreos or funnel cakes when it comes to sweet treats at the fair, but my favorite comes from the Horticulture Building at the New York Maple Producers booth – maple soft serve ice cream.
4. The Wool Center
A hidden gem at the end of Restaurant Row across from the main horse barn features wool spinning competitions and demonstrations. Fairgoers can learn how wool hats and mittens are made and can purchase wool products. The center may also be getting an update for next year.
5. Attend the New Americans Day ceremony
Held on New Americans Day, 100 people become Americans in a ceremony at Daniella’s Seafood and Pasta House. I was not able to attend this year, but it is on my list for 2025.
6. Evening parades held on specialty fair days
At 6 p.m. on specialty fair days, a parade kicks off from the Expo Center honoring guests from that day. For example, there is Pride Day, Law Enforcement Day, Women’s Day and the Labor Day parade which all run through the Midway and around the fairgrounds.
7. Highland cattle beef show
Highland cattle are a long-haired cattle breed that originated in Scotland making them a standout breed from standard cattle we typically see at the State Fair. Of all the livestock shows, this is one of my favorites.
8. Butterfly exhibit in the Horticulture Building
Interact with various butterfly species in the horticulture building for only $3. Fairgoers are given a Q-Tip with sugar water on the end to attract the butterflies.
9. Smoke dance competition in the Iroquois Indian Village
The traditional dance competition is broken up by age groups for both men and women, girls and boys. Having never seen this in person, I had goosebumps watching the people dance in their regalia.
10. Try all the new foods
Each year new and returning vendors bring new food items. I highly recommend trying all these new items. This year my favorite was Chocolate Taps in the Eatery.
