GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County EMS is creating a four-month-long EMT Launchpad. It will be its first-ever, in-house emergency medical technician academy.

Guilford County is accepting applicants without prior emergency medical training as members of the EMT Launchpad. These new employees will be in full-time positions with benefits while they train for and acquire their EMT certification.

All prior hiring for GCEMS has been open only to providers with EMT or paramedic certification.

During the program, students will have 28 hours each week of class and clinical experience running real-world EMS calls on a GCEMS ambulance while paired with a paramedic crew.

In addition to employee pay and benefits, all tuition, certification costs, fees, uniforms, equipment and course materials will be furnished by GCEMS.

Applications are being accepted through March 20, with the program expected to start near the end of April. 

Officials said they have 21 EMT positions open, and they're hoping to fill 12 of them through the Launchpad program with a starting salary of $31,200.

GCEMS runs about 90,000 calls annually and staffs an average of 23 ambulances and eight quick response vehicles per day. The agency employees 270 certified EMTs and paramedics.
