For the first time in 17 years, Watertown's buses are getting an upgrade.

Replacing the current buses and taking over the existing routes are four brand new buses. They come with more space, comfortable seating and ramp access for disabled passengers. They will also come with easier methods for people to pay.

"Our existing fleet were all 2002 model year Orion buses and they were well past their life expectancy. We were spending quite a bit of money on the maintenance and upkeep of those," said Patrick Keenan, superintendent at the city Department of Public Works.

"We wanted a little more consistency with our service, avoid break downs and general confusion," Keenan added.

The upgrades did come at a cost of nearly $500,000.

Officials said they hope the new buses will add to the transportation experience of the city.
