Cornell University is putting a pause on hiring.

In a release on Friday, the Ivy League school cites "significant financial uncertainty" across all higher education institutions.

Two factors behind that uncertainty are the potential for federal funding cuts to research and how their endowment could be impacted by tax legislation.

So for now, Cornell will only be advancing positions deemed "critical," which will have to go through a heavy review process.

University officials also signaling they will be reviewing at temporary appointments and contractors as well.
