This was the coldest January since 2015.
January marked the beginning of 2022, and what a snowy start to the new year! In fact, this is now tied for the twentieth snowiest January in all of Rochester’s history with 34.4 inches.
That included one day of record-breaking snowfall.
On January 17th, snow stacked up to 10.4 inches at the Rochester Airport, beating the old daily record from 1958 by roughly an inch.
All around, it was a snowy January. In fact, there were only three days the entire month where the Rochester Airport didn’t report any measurable snow.
Not only that, but it was a cold first month of 2022. The monthly average temperature came in at 19.5 degrees.
Compared to the last 30 years, that ended up being 6.7 degrees below average. It’s the greatest negative departure from average for a single month since February 2015.
It was an unusually mild start to the month. New Year’s Day was actually the warmest day of the month with a high of 49.
There would only be ten other days where Rochester hit or exceeded that freezing mark of 32. Only two of those occurred during the second half of January.
On the flip side, low temperatures dipped below 0 degrees five times last month. It’s now tied for the ninth greatest for the month of January in Rochester.
The coldest it got was -7, and that happened twice on January 22nd and the 30th, which makes last January the coldest since the harsh winter of 2014-2015.
