On September 1st, the average high for Rochester was 77 degrees and the average low was 57. This year, it was a milder start to the new month as Rochester started off the morning at 66, before turning seasonable later on with a high of 78 degrees.

Temperatures ran above average for the 2nd and 3rd as Rochester actually managed to climb into the low 80s. But what about the rest of the month?

September’s monthly outlook from the Climate Prediction Center has the Northeast in an EC sector. That means there’s an equal chance of above, normal, and below average temperatures.

If you look at the 8-14 day outlook though, Rochester and the Finger Lakes are expected to experience near normal to above average temperatures, with rainfall slightly above average, as well.

The overall monthly outlook has the Northeast also included in an equal chance sector in terms of rainfall.

So far, September has been off to a pretty dry start. The Rochester Airport only picked up 0.09” of rain on September 2nd.

Any rain throughout the month will be beneficial. While most of the area is still faring pretty well, some southern areas are now considered to be abnormally dry for this time of year according to the latest drought monitor.

When the weather is nice, get out and enjoy it because days will just continue to get shorter as the month goes on too. Sunrise was at 6:35 a.m. on September 1st with sunset at 7:44 p.m.

The autumnal equinox will mark the beginning of fall on the 22nd, but by the end of the month, the sun will rise at 7:07 a.m. and will set at 6:52 p.m. That’s not even 12 hours of daylight compared to the 13 hours and 9 minutes we experienced at the start of the month.
