FAIRPORT, N.Y. — The Fairport Village Tree Scavenger Hunt is back and underway throughout the month of August.
This year's contest includes some tree biology with fun facts and a scenic tree route that will take you around the village.
You're invited to pick up a tree map under the big tree at Potter Park and start looking for the 14 featured trees circled with green ribbons. When you find a tree, flip the tree card over and collect each tree part clue to help you solve the puzzle. The QR code on each tree card will also help get you started.
Bill Maier is a volunteer on the Fairport Village Tree Board that cares for more than 3,000 village trees that line the streets and fill the parks.
"Of course Fairport has some really awesome and majestic big trees," Maier said. "They give us shade and cool the neighborhoods and also provide habitat for wildlife. So trees give us a lot of good things in addition to of course the beauty."
Once you record each tree part on the back of the tree worksheet, solve the puzzle and mail it is to be entered to win a tree planted in the village in your honor.
Completed worksheets can be mailed to Fairport Village Hall, Attn: Tree Hunt, 31 S. Main St., Fairport, NY 14450 or send an email to the Tree Board at fairporttreehunt@gmail.com with your solution and address. The deadline to enter is August 31.
