It was a performance worthy of a standing ovation. And at Rochester’s Innovative Field, home of the Rochester Red Wings, one young man got just that — a tune by the club’s bat boy that was so sweet it sent shivers.

The ballpark is a place with a soundtrack of its own, and Cameron Liedmann gets to live it all summer long.

“Baseball’s been my life,” said Liedmann. “I’ve formed a lot of bonds with a lot of the players.”

Cam is in his third year with the Red Wings. During home games, he has the best seat in the house — the top step of the dugout.  You can’t beat it.

“Just the joy of having fun, meeting other people, and getting to work together as a team,” he said, regarding his favorite part of the game.

Baseball is also a game with a lot of down time. When the action stops is where Cam shines as the Red Wings bat boy.

“It's not just simply grabbing bats and foul balls,” he explained.

From etting up the dugout before games to delivering balls to the umpires during it, Cam is definitely one of the guys.

“They've all been extremely amazing to me,” he said. “Sometimes when I see them get called up to the big leagues, it's always so satisfying, but also upsetting because I won't see them again.”

Recently, Cam got his own call up, of sorts. During a seventh inning stretch he sang a rendition of "God Bless America" that sent chills inside the ballpark and blew up the club’s social media.

“I actually was never nervous,” said Liedmann. “It is really cool that I got so much feedback from people I don’t even know.”

Turns out the young man who started playing baseball in second grade has also been performing just as long.

“I played the beast in "Beauty and the Beast" twice,” he said. “I played Tarzan, believe it or not. Yes, I played Tarzan.”

A star on the diamond and a star on stage, being a bat boy means performing in front of big crowds. This wasn’t Cam’s first time, either. Last season, he sang the National Anthem before a game, and by all accounts, crushed it.

“It really is no big deal,” he said. “It’s just singing a song, and just going right at it.”

Good advice from a guy who wants to use his voice in other ways, as a baseball announcer. One more number in the soundtrack to the ballpark.

“It just felt like a long time coming, honestly,” said Liedmann. “Because I finally got to put my voice to use.”
