World Cup and Olympic champion Abby Wambach retired from soccer in 2015, but the Our Lady of Mercy School grad is staying busy in retirement, and is still keeping tabs on the sport that made her a global superstar.

“We went over to France last summer. I am a fan behind the scenes, no question about it, the biggest fan probably. I watch whenever I'm available," Wambach said.

Wambach, 40, is already a best-selling author and social activist, but she's ready to add team owner to her resume.

Recently, actress Natalie Portman invited her to join an investment group intent on bringing a professional women's team to Los Angeles as part of the National Women's Soccer League.

"They were going to compile and collect all of these U.S. Women's National Team players, former U.S. National Team players, the women who helped build women's soccer and offer them an opportunity to come in as founding investors. And for me it's like, it's really, it's truly a dream come true. Now it's being able to not just leave a legacy on the national team, but to really reshape and shape a professional team from the ground up," said Wambach.

Angel City FC is a unique group ownership concept with all the initial investors being women.

"To give my advice, to give my input, to give my perspective, to also try to build a new system, a new way of possible sports franchise ownership,” said Wamabch.

Having lived in the L.A. area previously, Wambach believes this team will flourish.

"The NWSL is just so successful and the best soccer players in the world play in our country, so we'll see it's gonna be a lot of fun. I'm excited," she added.
