Irondequoit police have provided an update on what caused Letchworth State Park to close Thursday afternoon.

Police say Andrew Vahey, 25, shot and killed his grandfather before eventually killing himself.

Around 5:45 a.m. Thursday, police say they responded to a scene on Pinegrove Avenue, where they found Joseph Deponceau, 81, dead in his home.

Police say the victim's girlfriend told officers what happened.

Officers were able to identify the vehicle Vahey was driving, locating him in Letchworth State Park around 12:30 p.m. Authorities then shut down the park.

Police say Vahey shot himself after being approached by law enforcement.

Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters says the community is in mourning.

"Even though we had a homicide, people in that family at the same time lost a grandfather and grandson,” he said. “To add to the tragedy of what normally doesn’t happen in Irondequoit, realizing that there’s a family that’s extremely hurting today.”

Peters said Vahey and Deponceau had been recently arguing about property, which may have led to the shooting.

He adds the case is now closed and there is no harm to the public.
