ROCHESTER, N.Y. — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Rochester's Willow Domestic Violence Center is sharing an update on domestic violence locally.
It reports more than 4,800 instances of domestic violence in the county last year. According to Willow, 911 received more than 45,000 calls identified as domestic violence disputes.
The pandemic highlighted challenges to helping those who are being or have been abused.
"Sheltering at home with an abuser is really difficult, but when you don't have a choice, when you can go nowhere else, it adds a whole nother layer of how are we getting help and where can we put wraparound services to make sure people can be safe," said Rep. Sarah Clark of the 136th Assembly District.
Willow's 24-hour hotline for domestic violence victims in need is (585) 222-7233. You can also text 585-348-SAFE.
