CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Police say a man is recovering after his single-engine plane crashed near the Canandaigua Airport.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says dispatchers received reports of the crash around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

First responders found the plane in a field northeast of the airport and say the man piloting the plane managed to pull himself out of the aircraft.

He was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital, with what officials are calling non-life-threatening injuries.

"Coming up over the back hill here and I happened to glance off to my right and a low plane come in up over the hill beside me over here in the wheat field," said witness Wayne Savage. "He was only about 20 feet off the wheat. And I come up over the hill, he disappeared, and I knew he didn't make it to the runway."

There has been no word yet on what caused the crash. Local officials say the FAA will investigate.
