ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police say a teenage girl is dead after she and another teen were struck by stray gunfire over the weekend.

Police responded to a home on Emerson Street after hearing gunshots around 10 p.m. on Saturday. When they arrived, they say they found the 16-year-old victim, Zahira Smith, with gunshot wounds to the upper body. Authorities say she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second victim, police say, is an 18-year-old female who was struck in the lower body. She was taken to URMC with non-life-threatening injuries, according to investigators.

Rochester police say the victims were attending a birthday party at the address when multiple shots were fired from the vacant lot across the street. They believe the two victims were not the intended targets.

After the initial shots, police say individuals on the opposite side of the street returned fire toward the vacant lot.

The RPD says the officers who first heard the shots then became involved in a foot chase with individuals who they believe returned fire. One person was arrested as a result of the chase, police say.

Ameer Andrews, 18, was taken into custody and officers recovered a loaded 9mm handgun with an illegal round capacity, according to investigators. Police say Andrews has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of an ammunition feeding device.

Andrews is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

Authorities say there have been no arrests made yet in connection in the death of Zahira Smith or the shooting of the second victim.
