ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new violence prevention plan is due this week from Rochester's mayor as the city remains on pace for another record-breaking year of violence.
The plan will not come in time for a man shot and killed late Sunday night just outside of downtown.
Police say the victim is a man in his 30s. They say he was shot on West Main Street.
The violence protection initiative from Mayor Malik Evans was announced last week before a 10-year-old girl was wounded on Saturday. Police say someone fired gunshots into her Moulson Street home. The girl was struck four times but is expected to recover.
"So far to date this year, we've taken 267 illegal firearms off the street, that's in four months, 267 illegal firearms off the street," said RPD Chief David Smith.
"We're rolling out our violence prevention initiative along with an update from the police department regarding this summer and how we're going to address, further address, some of these things that are happening," said Mayor Malik Evans. "But again, I want to reiterate if you know something, say something."
Anyone with information on any of these violent incidents can call 911 or contact Crime Stoppers at 585-428-9300.
