ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police say a 10-year-old girl is the latest victim in the rash of incidents in which Rochester homes have been struck by gunfire.

According to the Rochester Police Department, officers responded to Moulson Street just before 2 a.m. on Saturday for a report of a home struck by bullets and a child inside who had been shot.

Officers say the girl was shot four times and rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital where she's being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Through their investigation, authorities say they learned the girl was inside the house when it was hit by multiple gunshots.

Police say they do not have any suspects in custody.

"The preliminary investigation showed the young girl was in the living room, braiding her grandmother's hair, when she was struck by gunfire that came through the walls,” Rochester Police Chief David Smith said. Evidence was located indicating at least 20 gunshots were fired outside the home."

Investigators say the intended target of the shooting was a 32-year-old parolee living at the home, who allegedly tried to convince family members not to cooperate and even to destroy evidence at the scene.

"A 10-year-old child was shot multiple times and a convicted violent offender is not only refusing to provide information on what occurred, but is actively encouraging others in the investigation to remain silent,” Smith said. “It is this accepted cycle of violence and retaliation that leads us to where we are today."

"Rochester, is this what we're about? asked Mayor Malik Evans. “I know it's not. I know it's not. And all of these things that we're seeing, as far as these houses being shot up, they're all related. They're all related to unnecessary beefs. The problem now is that these beefs are being escalated and they're hurting innocent children."

The incident is part of a string of recent cases where homes have been hit by stray bullets, according to the RPD. In many of these occurrences, police say people inside have narrowly avoided being shot.

Police say on April 1, a child was sleeping on an air mattress in a home on Maria Street that was punctured by a bullet shot through the house. The child was not hurt.

The mayor says he plans to roll out a new violence prevention imitative next Wednesday.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 911 or the Crime Stoppers hotline at 585-428-9300.
