ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A fatal shooting Sunday night on North Goodman Street brought the total number of homicides this year in Rochester to 19.

That's the same amount of homicides as this time last year, which turned out to be the most violent year on record for the city.

Democratic Congressman Joe Morelle and former Rochester Police Chief La'Ron Singletary, the Republic candidate running against him, both spoke about the ongoing violence on Monday.

"The amount of guns on the street, it's just at historic highs,” Morelle said. “And we have to get our guns off the streets, and then continue to invest in community so that there are alternatives to violence.”

"First, lives are being lost,” Singletary said. “Second, there’s an economic impact. Without public safety, nothing else would be a priority. Small businesses and corporations would not want to come to Rochester. If we don't address the crime issue."

Morelle will be running for his third term in November, while Singletary is running for office for the first time.
