ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The two men accused of raping a girl inside a Rochester corner store last month appeared in Monroe County Supreme Court on Monday for arraignment on new charges after four more alleged victims came forward.
Shadad Alghaithy and James Hampton both pleaded not guilty to charges of first, second and third-degree rape after the alleged sexual attacks at the store at the corner of Central Park and Scio Street. The men are also charged with second and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
No contact orders of protection were also signed for the five alleged victims.
“We don’t have a case without them,” Assistant District Attorney Kevin Sunderland said. “Victims come forward and without them, we can’t go forward. It’s so important. That’s why we do everything we can to protect them when they do come forward.”
Sunderland believes the bravery of the first alleged victim, a young girl, led to more coming forward.
“The fact that she came forward is what led to those other victims wanting their voices to be heard,” said Sunderland. "You can’t underestimate the power of a minor coming forward.”
Sunderland said there’s always a possibility of more potential victims, but at this time he hasn’t heard of any.
Alghaithy and Hampton’s attorneys did not comment on the case.
The men are both being held without bail and are due back in court on June 6.
