ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The city of Rochester has marked its 76th homicide this year after what police are calling a random robbery attempt.
Just after midnight on Friday, officers responded to an address on Cummings Street. Minutes after their arrival, they say two people showed up at Rochester General Hospital with gunshot wounds.
Police say Davezhone Bratcher, 23, was pronounced dead soon after his arrival at the hospital. The second victim, a man in his 30s, is expected to survive and is in stable condition.
According to investigators, Bratcher was heading home after a Thanksgiving dinner with three other family members in the car, including his 5-year-old sister. While on Cummings street, police say the victims' vehicle was blocked by the suspect's vehicle. They say at least one suspect, armed with a handgun, approached the victim's vehicle. Police believe the suspect did not know the victims and they say this was a random robbery attempt.
The victims' vehicle, driven by the man in his 30s, attempted to back up and flee the suspect. Police say that's when the suspect opened fire, striking the driver and Bratcher. Despite being shot in the upper body, the driver immediately drove to Rochester General Hospital, police say. The other two occupants in the vehicle, including the 5-year-old, were not hurt.
A second shooting took place on the 400 block of Portland Avenue around the same time, investigators say. According to the RPD, a 32-year-old man from the city went to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Less than a half-hour later, just before 1 a.m. Friday, officers responded to Helena Street for the report of multiple people shot. They say a 40-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, both city residents, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, police have not said whether there is any connection between the shootings, however, the Major Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation.
There are no suspects in custody and anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to call 911.
Rochester surpassed its own record for the number of homicides in one year several weeks ago and has continued to add to that number.
