ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 15-year-old shot and killed on Peckham Street in Rochester on election night has been identified as an RCSD student.

Police say Jamere Wade was rushed to Rochester General Hospital in a private vehicle where he underwent surgery but died a short time later. It follows another incident last month in which a 17-year-old RCSD student was shot while walking to a bus stop in the area of Dewey Avenue and Alameda Stree. That teen survived.

Superintendent Dr. Lesli Meyers-Small has now outlined plans to address violence in schools and how to support her students, staff and families.

The plan will provide mental health resources and extra security at school, but Myers-Small also says she believes a shortage in staff is a big contributor to violence. More staff would mean more supervision of students.

Recruitment events will be held in the community, including at the Rochester Public Market on Saturdays.

New incentives are being offered such as bonuses for newly-hired staff who stay at least a year, retention bonuses and attendance bonuses for those missing fewer than two days.

Several teachers have come forward saying they were assaulted in schools, especially in the midst of trying to break up students fighting.

Myers-Small discussed training for teachers to handle situations.

"Staff will learn how to match the level of response to the risk of the disruptive behavior and implement the least restrictive response," she said.

Myers-Small says more central office staff will step in to help schools with supervision and substituting.
