ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tyquan Rivera previously served eight years in prison for shooting a Rochester Police officer. Now, he will serve almost twice that amount of time on a criminal drug sale plea.
Rivera, 27, was sentenced Tuesday morning to 15 years after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance last month.
He admitted to selling fentanyl to an undercover trooper on Sept. 12, 2019.
The sentencing satisfies a separate assault charge pending against him in a case involving an ex-girlfriend.
“I want to thank the New York State Police and the Rochester Police Department for their investigation that led to the arrest of and ultimate plea by Tyquan Rivera,” Assistant District Attorney Matthew Schwartz said in a statement. “Our community is safer with Tyquan Rivera in the New York State Department of Corrections, instead of promoting deadly narcotics. It is the hope of the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office that Mr. Rivera will spend the next 15 years reflecting on his actions that led to this point.”
“Tyquan Rivera has proved time and time again that he has no interest in being a law-abiding citizen,” Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said in a statement. “The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office is relieved that he will spend the next 15 years in the New York State Department of Corrections, rather than continuing to promote illegal narcotics and violence in our community.”
In 2009, Rivera, then 14, was arrested for shooting Rochester Police Officer Anthony Diponzio. Diponzio survived the shooting with career-altering injuries.
