MACEDON , N.Y. — Rescue crews raced to save a man who went into the Erie Canal on Tuesday and did not resurface. He did not survive.
Police say the man was fishing near Lock 30 in Macedon with his four-year-old son and dog when the dog went in the water. The man reportedly went in after the dog and did not come back up.
“Responding officers able to ascertain the child didn’t fall in, but his father jumped in to save the dog that had fallen in by the doors," Macedon Police Chief John Colella said.
Police confirm the man has died, but the dog survived, as rescue crews found it downstream from where it jumped in.
“Witnesses saw the individual calling for help," Colella said. "At some point he went under water and didn’t come back up."
Police also say the man's son is doing OK and is with his mother.
Officials have not yet released the man's name.
