The Ontario County Health Department and sheriff's office say a recent fatal overdose was caused by street drugs laced with Xylazine. It's the same substance linked to fatal overdoses in Monroe County.
Xylazine is often referred to as horse tranquilizer and is used by veterinarians to sedate aminals. The drug is not approved for use in humans and can cause serious and unexpected effects such as:
- Central nervous system depression: Blurred vision, disorientation, dizziness, drowsiness, difficulty moving, slurred speech and fatigue
- Respirator depression: Shallow breathing or no breathing
- Cardiovascular effects: Low blood pressure and slower heart rate
Officials warn that it is being cut with heroin, cocaine and fentanyl.
Making the drug even more dangerous is the fact that Narcan does not work for Xylazine overdoses. However, the health department says Narcan should still be given to someone during an overdose since Xylazine is often mixed with opioids.
