ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department has identified the man shot and killed by an officer outside of the Open Door Mission Wednesday morning.
They also released a timeline of events leading up to that shooting.
Police identified the man as Tyshon Jones, 29. Officers say Jones lived with his mother in Gates and left his house Tuesday morning.
At around 3 p.m., police say he was at a store and a person bought him food, saying Jones then followed that person to his residence.
Officers in Gates were later contacted out of concern because Jones was walking around without shoes on.
Gates Police say at no time during their interaction with Jones did he show signs he was a threat to himself or others.
Police say Jones told officers he was homeless, and that Jones allowed them to transport him to a local shelter on Hobart Street, where they say he was denied entry at first because he had no shoes. One of the officers was able to quickly get boots for Jones and he was allowed in.
Gates PD says it appears he was still wearing those boots when he died.
At around 11:30 Tuesday night, police say Jones left the shelter and wandered in the area of West Avenue in downtown Rochester.
Rochester officers say they were called at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after Jones allegedly locked himself inside a residential building, but they say Jones left before officers arrived.
Less than 30 minutes later Jones arrived outside Open Door Mission, where police say he obtained a knife from the kitchen and threatened to hurt himself and officers.
He was shot and killed outside following a six minute incident in which police requested he drop the knife while he proceeded to walk at officers.
All officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, and the case is being investigated by the Monroe County District Attorney.
