President of the United Christian Leadership Ministry, Rev. Lewis Stewart, spoke with reporters Saturday afternoon to express his grief regarding the mass shooting of young people on Pennsylvania Avenue.
He also said people need to be just as outraged about this as they are about Daniel Prude's death.
"We should be just as outraged by gun violence caused by residents just as much so as it is caused by police who shoot innocent Black men and women,” said Stewart.
Stewart said shootings in the community show that police cannot be defunded, but he said UCLM does advocate putting more funding and resources towards mental health services.
He is also calling for clergy to do more reaching out to young people to stop them from getting involved with violence.
"The clergy must be much more forceful in getting out there not only when something happens, where you have the clergy on patrol and they get out there, and although I applaud that, but we must get out there each and every day and talk to our young people,” said Stewart.
Stewart said UCLM grieves for the families of the victims who died, and that more needs to be done to stop guns from illegally coming into the state and in the hands of people on the streets.
He also asked if anyone knows anything about Saturday morning’s mass shooting, to tell the police.
