The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has suspended the search for the missing swimmer in Lake Ontario for the evening. The MSCO says they will resume the search Saturday morning, dependent on the weather.

The MSCO's Marine Unit responded to reports of a swimmer in distress around 5:40 p.m. on Thursday. The area is approximately one and a half miles north of the Irondequoit Bay outlet. The MCSO’s Marine Unit, the U.S. Coast Guard, and West Webster Fire responded to the call, and were assisted by New York State Police aviation.

Officials say the man jumped in the water to go swimming, but encountered difficulties.

Deputies say there are many challenges when a person goes missing so far out from shore.

"From my understanding, the vessel was drifting. So the wind is coming out of the north-northwest at 15 mph. As you know the wind direction, so on and so forth, it adds a little bit of a different spin to do a proper search grid, but there's professionals out there. This isn't the first time they've done this, so I'm sure that they'll work through this as professionals," said Lt. Dean Tuthill of the Monroe Count Sherrif's Office.

Officials say the man disappeared in about 90 feet of water.
