A body was found in a stream behind a building on Mill Street in Mount Morris on Friday, according to the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.

  • Sheriff says there is no fear for public safety

Officials say the body was decomposed and had been there for weeks or months.

Sheriff Tom Dougherty and his team originally believed the body might be that of David Clyde Morgan, who ran away from an armed confrontation with a Geneseo police officer last summer and hasn't been seen since.

After reviewing x-rays on Saturday, investigators identified the deceased as James Lowery, 71, of Springwater, New York. He was reported missing to the New York State Police last fall and was a "known wanderer."

The cause of the death remains under investigation.
