CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Officials in Ontario County say the county clerk died unexpectedly this week.

According to a news release from the county's Office of the County Administrator, Matthew Hoose, 54, died on Tuesday.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to Hoose's home in Canandaigua around 9:30 a.m. for a report of an unattended death. Investigators say Hoose's death does not appear to be suspicious.

The statement from the county read in part:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family. We ask that the privacy of his family be respected."

The sheriff's office added:

"The men and women of the Ontario County Sheriff's Office extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Hoose family during this difficult time. There is no further comment and we ask that the privacy of the Hoose family be respected."

Last week, the Ontario County Board of Supervisors approved a vote of no confidence in Hoose, claiming he was negligent and falling behind on required reports and payments to state entities.

The board is hiring an independent auditor to look into the finances of the clerk's office.
