ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tuesday is primary day in New York for a handful of congressional and New York State Senate races.
In the Finger Lakes region, there is a three-candidate Republican primary in New York’s newly-drawn 24th Congressional District. That district now includes all of Wayne and Cayuga counties.
This is the second primary this summer following all the delays and back and forth about proper redistricting procedures. The redrawing of political maps in the state means registered Republican voters in Wayne and Cayuga counties will help decide who the 24th District Republican congressional candidate will be on that November ballot.
This Republican primary features three candidates: Rep. Claudia Tenney, Mario Fratto and George Phillips.
In Wayne County, the Republican Board of Elections commissioner says so far, early primary voting has been disappointing. Only 105 registered Republicans in Wayne County voted in the nine days of early voting. He says in the June primary, only 150 people turned out early to vote. The BOE cost, he says, was $70,000 to run all those sites. He is hoping voters show up on primary day.
"So far the early voting turnout has been very dismal," said Wayne County BOE Commissioner John Zornow. "It's a Republican federal primary. We are a county of 90,000 residents with 23,000 registered Republicans, so it was not a good turnout. People have a tendency to only vote in major elections but you have to make yourself available and follow the state rules and that's it."
Polls are open until 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
The winner of this Republican primary will face Democrat Steven Holden in the November election.
The 24th District is considered solidly Republican, so the winner of the GOP Primary will likely win the general election and serve as the next member of Congress.
