ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A detention hearing was held Thursday morning for the Army veteran accused of threatening New York GOP gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin during a campaign stop last week.
During the hearing, the judge ruled David Jakubonis will be staying in custody until August 24 saying she needs to hear more details about his alleged weapon, mental health and inpatient care for alcoholism.
The Fairport man was captured on video approaching Zeldin with a self-defense keychain as he spoke to supporters in Perinton — part of the Republican candidate's campaign for New York governor.
The video shows members of the crowd subduing Jakubonis. No one was hurt according to authorities.
Right now, police say Jakubonis is accused of assaulting a member of Congress using a dangerous weapon, which is a federal crime. Prior charges had allowed Jakubonis to be released for a short time.
Zeldin has challenged New York criminal justice reforms in his campaign for governor, including those that allow for the release of people suspected of violent crimes.
