ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester invites artists to submit applications for the 69th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. It’s the city's longest running juried artist showcase.
Artists in the 27-county area of Western and Central New York are encouraged to enter. Seven cash prizes will be awarded.
Timothy Peterson, the Memorial Art Gallery’s first curator of contemporary art, will serve as the juror for this year’s exhibition. He has 36 years of curator experience at venues all over the country, but recently moved to Rochester. Every local artist will be new to him.
“We are really looking for what you think is great," Peterson said. "I’m a contemporary curator, so I’ll be looking at it from the context with everything going on in the region and in the state and elsewhere. Most of all I am just thrilled to get this introduction to the innumerable number of artists."
One look around the MAG and you will see some famous artists, including 20th century paintings from Alma Thomas and the artistic expression from the “Father of Video Art,” Nam June Paik.
This open call for artists for the RFLX showcase is a MAG tradition.
“It is open access," Peterson said. "It is a great platform for the artist to be seen within the museum. It is a great opportunity. Everyone who is applying to this is blind to me. We have 350 submissions so far."
There’s still time to enter. The deadline is Sunday, Feb. 16. You can apply online at mag.rochester.edu. It’s open for artists aged 18 and older. The exhibit opens June 28 and runs until Oct. 5.
