State and county health officials are investigating both confirmed and possible cases of bird flu in the Finger Lakes region.

Ontario and Yates county leaders say a group of 50 snow geese found dead at Kashong Point on Seneca Lake near Geneva are being tested for highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI.

This comes after the state Department of Environmental Conversation confirmed a group of birds tested positive for the virus just across the lake at Lakeshore Landing in the Seneca County town of Romulus.

Authorities say there is no immediate cause for alarm as there's a low risk to the public.

They're asking community members to monitor their local animals as HPAI can infect other mammals, including cows and, in rare instances, humans.

You can report any suspected cases by heading to the DEC's website.
