A grand opening was held on Thursday for a new warming shelter in Monroe County.

People looking for someplace warm during these cold winter months can find the Brockport Community Warming Center at the Brockport First Baptist Church on Main Street.

The center is open whenever "code blue" is in effect. That's when the temperature hits the freezing point or below.

The center is open as needed on evenings and overnights during the week and weekends. It can provide access to county and nonprofit services.

"Rural areas particularly face unique challenges when the temperatures drop and a center like this really represents what we're able to do when we put our heads together and overcome those challenges," said Robin Govanlu, chief of behavioral health at Oak Orchard Health.

The center has been up and running since just before Christmas and says it has already assisted a dozen people.

Anyone needing shelter during a "code blue" can call 585-340-1355.

The Regional Transit Service also provides free rides to all the warming shelters in Monroe County. All they have to do is tell the bus driver they need to go to a warming center.
