ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Around two dozen veterans were honored at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester on Veterans Day.
The ceremony, hosted by the Monroe County American Legion, ensures all veterans are celebrated for their service. Many veterans in attendance said there’s a sense of camaraderie at events like this by being with those who understand the sacrifices they’ve made.
The American Legion wanted to use this event to make sure veterans in the community know they’re appreciated. Different organizations laid wreaths at the veteran’s memorial, honoring those who served.
American Legion Commander John Compitello said ceremonies like this are a way to keep veterans and their service visible in the community.
“Many veterans came home and were just discharged," Compitello said. "They didn’t get that recognition that they’re due. Any time we recognize veterans and what they’ve done for the country, we should do that."
Veterans were also given handmade cards from local elementary schools thanking them for their service.
