The Rochester Red Wings are teaming up with New York state to help keep the community safe on the road.

The Red Wings hosted Traffic Safety Awareness Day at Innovative Field on Wednesday.

Held in partnership with the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the team is working to spread the word about the dangers of speeding and impaired driving. Fans attending their game against the Syracuse Mets also heard from state safety officials about the importance of wearing a seatbelt and practicing safe driving skills.

"Unsafe speed is the number one cause contributing factor of fatalities in our community," Monroe County Director of Public Safety Rich Tantalo said. "And it is something that we are striving to work on and reduce. We need to prevent those deaths from occurring. And they are preventable."

This comes one day after U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Rochester has the highest level of fatal crashes of any mid-sized city in the state.
