CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications now for its free Citizen Police Academy. The academy gives Ontario Country residents an inside look at how things are done at the sheriff’s office.


What You Need To Know

  •  The OCSO Citizen Police Academy is Sept 5. to Oct. 24

  •  The academy is free of charge

  • You must be 18 years old to apply

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office fields around 180,000 calls for fire, police and EMS services annually. The Citizen Police Academy is a chance to see just about everything they do, from road patrols to crime scene investigations.

"You get personal interaction with police officers from the administration down through the first-line supervisors to the corrections division, the 911 officers and the road patrol deputies. You develop personal relationships with them that are so instrumental in this day and age of policing," said Ontario County Undersheriff Mike Rago.

The Citizen Police Academy is every Thursday from 6-9 p.m., Sept. 5 to Oct. 24. You must be 18 to apply. The deadline to register is Sept. 1.
