Police are searching for a suspect after six people were in downtown Rochester early Sunday morning.

Officials say they responded to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square at around 2:45 a.m. for what sounded like gunshots. When they arrived on scene, police say they found a 33-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Shortly after, police say five other victims, three males and two females, were located. All are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at local hospitals. All are between 17 and 25 years old.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows that a group of people were hanging out after hours at the park when at least one person pulled out a gun and began firing into the crowd.

Another man was arrested after allegedly fighting with police while they were attempting to disperse the crowd. An officer was injured while taking the man into custody and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

"These scenes are very chaotic," RPD Chief David Smith said. "It is very hard to determine, quite frankly, who is a suspect and who is a victim and what is going on. Especially when you are dealing with crowds of this size. So our primary responsibility in these situations is to try and regain order [and] try to take charge and de-escalate the situation and sort things out. When you have people that are actively fighting with officers who are trying to render medical attention, obviously, it makes it that much harder."

Due to the size of the scene, a number of agencies responded and the investigation into who was responsible for the shooting is ongoing.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced Tuesday that it is offering a $5,000 reward for help in finding those responsible for the shooting.

Mayor Malik Evans announced several public safety measures Sunday evening in an effort to address illegal gatherings and related gun violence.

MLK Park will close at 8 p.m. moving forward, with parkgoers asked to leave by 7 p.m. The mayor says those who refuse to leave will be violating city code and will be charged appropriately.

The RPD is also closing Court Street between Chestnut Street and the traffic circle through June 30 until further notice.
