Rochester Mayor Malik Evans announced several public safety measures Sunday evening in an effort to address illegal gatherings and related gun violence.

This comes after six people were shot early Sunday morning at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square.

MLK Park will close at 8 p.m. moving forward, with parkgoers asked to leave by 7 p.m. The mayor says those who refuse to leave will be violating city code and will be charged appropriately.

The RPD is also closing Court Street between Chestnut Street and the traffic circle through June 30 until further notice.

"We will not tolerate these unlawful, out-of-control gatherings in our public spaces," Evans said in a statement. "I will use everything in my power under the City Code and gun violence state of emergency to prevent these violent incidents and hold people accountable for their actions."

The mayor says additional security and RPD patrols will be committed to other city police spaces into the overnight hours until further notice.

Evans says leaders from across the city are working to identify more potential tactics to curb illegal gatherings.
