CHILI, N.Y. — The boot stomping and toe tapping of line dancing is more popular than ever. The synchronized choreography to popular songs has people of all ages lining up to dance.

What You Need To Know

  • Line dancing is a fun fitness activity for people of all ages

  • A line dance is a choreographed dance in which a group of people dance along to a sequence of steps while in one or more lines or rows

  • Line dancing can help improve coordination, balance, increase cardiovascular health and brain memory

Step, slide, heel twist, strut and sweep - seniors are having fun trying all those moves together at the Chili Community Center's Line Dancing Class.

"It's the best thing I have ever done. I love it. I have been doing it now just about three years. There are beautiful people here and I wouldn't miss it," said Deb Randle of Chili.

Randle attends two classes a week with about 45 other seniors. Denise Moore started line dancing eight years ago. She's gone from student to instructor and loves every second of it.

"Line dancing covers all the bases. It increases memory, cognition, physical help with your heart and your mind, eye to hand coordination. It's a mood lifter and it's socialization. It's good for you in every way," said Moore.

Jerry Romanowski loves it and leads some of the dances too. Romanowski is also the only man in the class.

"The guys just have to get here. Once you do it and start with partner dancing and once you really know it, you will find that it's very invigorating. You just get out here and try it," he said.

"We all started somewhere and we were clumsy and tripping over ourselves. You'll get it and it's been great," said Randle.

New summer line dancing classes are starting soon. Look for similar programs where you live. Some bars and restaurants are hosting line dancing classes too.
