A push by local leaders to recognize the Strong Museum as the National Museum of Play has taken a step further.

Rep. Joe Morelle celebrated the passage of his legislation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, which works to recognize the Strong Museum of Playas the National Museum of Play

Museum officials express how the recognition by a branch of the federal government can help put Rochester on the map.

And though the bill still has to pass in the Senate, officials also emphasize the importance the act of play has for children everywhere, as it is their chance to interact and learn about the physical world around them.

"Being able to be in a position at a museum that recognizes the impact of play on the individual, on culture and society, it's just a tremendous opportunity for us," said Steve Dubnik, CEO of the Strong Museum of Play. "And to have that in Rochester and to draw people from all 50 states from across the globe to Rochester, it's also a big economic impact."

“The Strong is a one-of-a-kind destination for families of all ages, underscoring the importance of lifelong learning, creativity, and discovery through play,” Morelle said in a statement. “I’m proud to have authored and passed legislation to secure the national recognition they deserve. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to join us in swiftly passing this bill to cement The Strong’s legacy and showcase their leadership on the national stage.”
