BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Statewide firefighter recruitment efforts continue this week. The Brighton Fire Department is hosting a field day specifically for women interested in becoming a firefighter.
Volunteer fire departments are looking to increase volunteer membership. Brighton is hosting Female Firefighter Field Day on Sunday. It's a free event to learn what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter like Alannah Scardino. She's been at Brighton for about two years now.
This free event is a chance to talk to her and other firefighters, try on some gear, check out the equipment and tour the firehouse.
"We will start teaching them the tools and the equipment and how to put it on and how to use it to be a safe firefighter. Alannah actually comes to us from outside of Boston, where she was a volunteer through college. So she saw a billboard we had up that said 'women firefighters wanted' and she chose to come here and learn about it, and we are so lucky to have her," said David Metzger of the Brighton Fire Department.
The Brighton Fire Department covers 18 square miles and has three fire stations.
You are asked to pre-register for the Female Firefighter Field Day at Brighton's East Avenue fire station or call (585) 381-3200.
