On a day couples celebrated romance and love, some were just getting started on their official commitment to each other. Rochester City Hall became a Valentine’s Day wedding chapel.
In a room usually reserved for policy, on Wednesday Rochester City Council chambers was booked for a promise. The promise of love.
“I think it’s extra special for some couples to say they were married on Valentine’s Day,” said Bridgette Burch White.
As the deputy city clerk, Burch White has presided over hundreds of weddings.
“We do weddings pretty much every day,” she said.
They’re all special. This day, even more so.
“I love doing the weddings,” she said. “It’s the favorite part of my job on any day, but it’s especially nice on Valentine’s Day.”
Each couple has a different story about how they met. And how they picked Valentine’s Day for their wedding day.
“Today is our officially 10-year anniversary,” said Shantal James, standing by her newlywed husband Dharwin.
“An easy day to remember,” said Kenya Rosario-James, of the decision to marry husband Donshae on Feb. 14. “The love we have for each other, we just decided to get married today.”
A uniquely special day. A day that is both life-changing, and name-changing. A promise from this day forth — sealed with a kiss.
“It’s just a symbol of the love that they have for each other,” said Burch White. “And something they’ll always remember every Valentine’s Day.”
